Could you give us a brief description of your start-up and explain the reasons that led you to establish it up?
AEQUIP is a start up born from the research activities developed by Prof. F. Molinari and Eng. M. Salvi at the Polytechnic of Turin.
Aequip operates in the field of Digital Pathology, the branch of pathology which studies human diseases through examinations of tissues morphology from digitized histological slides.
The algorithms used by AEQUIP’s system allow the automatic extraction of quantitative parameters from tissue slides, supporting pathologist during the diagnostic process, providing precise, detailed and solid results over time, allowing them to evaluate details that cannot be observed by naked eye. The ultimate goal is to improve the quality of the diagnosis.
We decided to establish AEQUIP because we believe that our technology has the scientific potential to relieve the pressing problems of the anatomical pathology field, help medical specialists in their work and provide a more precise, detailed and quicker diagnosis for patients.
Cancer is the second leading cause of mortality in the world and tools like AEQUIP could provide a great support in facing this problem.
Which pathologies does your digital support address and which examples do you have to date?
The first product that we are validating allows the digital recoloring of the the sub-otimal stained tissue slides. This will simplify the work of pathologist avoiding errors and reducing delays due to non-optimal staining.
Tissues: Prostate, Breast, Liver, Colon, Kidney
Staining: H&E, PAS, TRIC, IHC
The other products, such as tumor tissue recognition and tumor quantification, will be primarily developed for Prostate and Breast cancer and for H&E and IHC stains.
